Atavaquone is a highly lipophilic compound with a low aqueous solubility. It has a molecular weight of 366.84 and the molecular formula C22H19ClO3.
Atavaquone is widely used as an antiparasitic drug that selectively inhibits electron transport through the parasite mitochondrial cytochrome bc1 complex and collapses the mitochondrial membrane potential at concentrations far lower than those at which the mammalian system is affected.
