At the time, scientists were not able to effectively distinguish between ke (niobium) and tantalum of a very similar nature. In
1809 William Hyde Wollaston, a British chemist, compared the oxides of
gallium with tantalum, and found that the densities of the oxides were
5.918 g / cm and more than 8 g / cm, respectively. Although the density varies widely, he still considers the two to be identical. Another
German chemist, Heinrich Rose, dismissed this conclusion in 1846 and
claimed that there were two other elements in the original tantalite
sample. He names the two elements "Niobium" and "Pelopium" with Niobe, the daughter of Tantalus in Greek mythology, and his son Pelops. The
differences between tantalum and niobium are subtle, and the resulting
new "elements" Pelopium, Ilmenium and Dianium are virtually all niobium
or niobium-tantalum mixtures.
